THE DOCTOR IS IN
the doctor is in – pen and pencil on paper – 1993
This drawing comes from the same year my sketchbook containing these types of images was stolen. It shows the level of detail I went into with the paper mate pen, including cutting blocks out of the paper with an exacto knife and adding slips of torn magazines behind for an added effect. the difference here is that this image is a full page in size, roughly 8 1/2 x 11 inches, whereas my previous drawings inside the book had as many as 3 of these scenes in one page.
This scene depicts a bio-robotic doctor hovering above a dying cyborg lying on an operating table, ripping the man apart in a type of frenzied biopsy. Maybe it was me trying to destroy the last remnants of the anger i felt at having lost that book. In a way, I am the man on the operating table also, the contents of my brain oozing out on the paper (tiled floor here) for all to see. With a nod to the terminator scene in which the t-1000 morphs out of the tile floor, which left an impact on me at the time.
This borrows a lot from the marvel comics of my youth, particularly the covers of some of the x-men, and from h.r.giger whose art i was fascinated by at the time and even now.
