THE DOUBLE DAGGER: SEMIGOD
I used this symbol in my art and on this site as a representation of the human experience, at least within my own life and point of view. To me, it represents a cross, a symbol of Christianity and a signifier of good, placed upright. But within it also appears an upside-down, inverted cross, the signifier of evil. Both of these coexist in harmony. Hidden in the negative space are also two letter E’s facing each other—two Eddys staring at one another. I’m not a religious person, so the cross, whether upright or upside down, holds no religious significance to me; the two crosses in the icon I use are simply a typographical mark used to indicate a footnote or annotation.
Choosing this icon was not thought out at all, and the meaning I’ve given it was purely retconned after I had picked it as my personal symbol. The creation of my original website, the name “Semigod,” and the icon were all last-minute decisions. I had a conversation on a Saturday about calling someone the following Monday for a possible job. That Monday, the person on the phone asked if I had a website where she could see my art. Without skipping a beat, I told her I would have one by Friday. So, I scrambled to put together the first iteration of this site nearly 20 years ago. The site needed a name, and it had to be short, memorable, and easy to spell. That Tuesday, while searching for reference pictures, I found a Chinese website filled with chinese text, but one word in English stood out among them: SEMIGOD. The page was about dramas involving ancient gods or something similar. The name “Semigod” bounced around my head all week, and when the time came to choose a name, that word won out.
My retcon for the meaning of the word “Semigod” now is that it embodies being close to god-like. God represents perfection, and as humans, we could never achieve this. We could only ever reach semi-god status, being as close to perfection as humanly possible.
I’m not sure how I came across this icon or why I chose it, but it works now, and it fits.
The good within the bad. The bad existing within the good, in harmony.
Welcome to my site. Enjoy your stay.
